Action Plan - are you in on it ?

Had a very pleasant day in London today as guest of the Royal Geographical Society (along with my GA Action Plan colleagues)
The sun shone, and we discussed the various strands of the Action Plan.
You may not know about all of them...

A recap of the APG2 projects:
GEOGRAPHY TEACHING TODAY WEBSITE
This now hosts a huge variety of resources, all of them 'quality assured' as they come with the authority of the Royal Geographical Society / Geographical Association.

From next week (or the week after), the site will be updated. The width of the site is being improved, to give more space, and also make it more readable on the screen.

AMBASSADORS
Make sure you get an Ambassador visit to your school - they are undergraduates will talk about geography, and over 900 visits have so far been made under the scheme

CHARTERED GEOGRAPHER
There are now over 100 of us... If you meet the criteria, get some professional recognition for your efforts !

Fieldwork and LOCAL LEARNING work
Great work co-ordinated by Eleanor Coulber, including free courses for teachers and students.

Curriculum Making
A series of events, where teachers met to 'create' the curriculum
There were also 3 ONLINE UNITS:

Subject Leadership: This unit lets you consider what it means to be a subject leader, explores how concepts help frame geography and how we can use geographical significance in curriculum making.

Geography as a Resource: This unit asks what it means to 'think geographically', explores the importance of enquiry and looks at the role of textbooks in the classroom.

Curriculum Making: In this unit you will think about curriculum making, bringing together what you have learnt about concepts, content and enquiry to consider how we might ensure progression in geography.

And finally, some RESOURCES produced by people who attended the courses.

YOUNG PEOPLE'S GEOGRAPHIES
A conversation between academics, teachers and students. An exciting new website is going live shortly, and will be featured here.

HANDBOOK EXTENSION PROJECTS
PRIMARY and SECONDARY HANDBOOKS had additional material written for them by experienced teachers.

MAKING GEOGRAPHY HAPPEN
More on this over the next few months.

TRAINING and DEVELOPMENT AGENCY CPD units
Some exciting new resources aimed at developing pedagogy and providing new ideas for teaching difficult and contemporary issues.

NEW NETWORKS
Already launched: the EARLY CAREER TEACHER / NQT NING, and the GEOGRAPHICAL ASSOCIATION NING.

PRIMARY CHAMPIONS
We are now recruiting Primary Champions in each region. Do you have what it takes to make a real difference to Primary Geography in your area ? Why not apply to become a Primary Champion ?

PRIMARY QUALITY MARK
There are 3 levels of this award: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

SECONDARY QUALITY MARK
Enter your school for a quality mark, or go for 'Centre of Excellence' status.

And don't forget that you will have a REGIONAL SUBJECT ADVISER as part of the CfBT scheme.
The focus is on GIS, and you need to get in touch before the end of April 2009.

There's plenty more to come, and you can learn all about it by following the blog...
