It's a disaster... Primary resource co-creation

Attention Primary Geography teachers...

HAITI/ MADEIRA/ EARTHQUAKE/ L'AQUILA/ COCKERMOUTH/ KATRINA/ BUSH FIRE/ PAKISTAN/ TSUNAMI/
What do these words conjure up...? The Early Years and Primary Committee of the Geographical Association are inviting further contributions to their discussions about teaching the subject of 'disaster' to Primary age children. We hope to put together a resource, a collection of links, paths and possibilities for teachers who are looking to be 'creative' with their curriculum in the next few months. We want to see if we can collaborate on an exciting way forward for teachers who want something fresh and new for their Primary Geography. We have no fixed idea how such a resource would be disseminated, used (it is NOT a unit of work) or put together. So, all we ask of the wider NING community is for your ideas, advice and wisdom! To get us started, what do you think of the following: Listen to a news broadcast or open a newspaper and you cannot fail to be struck by the relevance of geography.(Ofsted, 2008)
Are there ages at which it is appropriate to teach about such human suffering? Is it important to paint a positive image of 'them', those people that are seen as being affected by the disasters? Is it the human or physical nature of such disasters that is most important? Have you an activity to share that is useful in teaching about the concept of disaster? Many thanks in advance!

Head over to the GA Ning for more on this resource.
