Discover the World Iceland grant

School travel company Discover the World recently made a grant of £2000 available to a school who could explain why they deserved it, in 200 words or less.
Here's the details of the winner....

After much debate, a GA panel finally picked Clapton Girls’ Academy in London as it was felt that their entry highlighted how the school had been actively taking steps to change students’ views of the subject and increase numbers opting for GCSE geography.
The school’s application, from Marc Cologne, stated that ‘When I arrived at Clapton Girls’ as Head of Department last year, pupils’ perception of geography were poor and pupils deemed the subject boring and predictable. ‘Throughout this academic year the department has looked to offer the best
opportunities and experiences in geography ... The department has held the Worldwise Quiz for the first time in Hackney, run new trips and Geography Awareness Week and Geography workshops ... If Clapton Girls’ was awarded this grant it would continue the geography department’s efforts to improve the provision for pupils’ across all years.’
The GA was also impressed by the school’s aim to introduce A-level geography and, eventually, have geography graduates as part of their legacy. We hope that this substantial grant and the subsequent trip to Iceland will help them achieve this.

There is a repeat of the offer now available for 2013.
